KNIT OUR ORIGINAL ISLE OF WIGHT GANSEY

Join our 8 week course to knit your own unique Isle of Wight fisherman’s Gansey in 100% British wool to our original design

A Gansey is a jumper hailing from small fishing communities. Traditionally made for those working at sea the yoke of each Gansey would have distinctive designs to identify the port of the wearer. The knitted pattern was unique to each port and used to identify the wearer. As people would not have been able to read or write the pattern was handed down word of mouth through generations. Gansey’s were also functional items made from a worsted wool given a tight weave, the lanolin in the yarn making the finished item warm and water resistant.

Our unique Isle of Wight Gansey with its own Island pattern has been created by knitwear designer Gail Middleton exclusively for us. We too are only passing on the pattern by word of mouth on our knitting course in the company of knitters of all levels.
